Cleaning Techniques to Extend the Life of Your New Hearing Aids

One of the easiest things you can do to ensure the best sound quality from your new hearing aids is to develop a daily routine for cleaning and storing them. RegularRegular cleaning and maintenance will extend the life of your hearing aids to their fullest cleaning can also extend the life of your hearing aids. When you get your hearing aids, your hearing care professional will give you the tools and show you the proper cleaning techniques for your specific device, but we offer this convenient guide in case you need a refresher!

Make It a Habit

You will want to make cleaning your hearing aids a part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth. Unfortunately, many hearing aid wearers treat the routine more like flossing their teeth—we all know we should floss regularly, but most of us only do it right before we are scheduled to visit the dentist. Being lazy about cleaning your hearing aids not only will compromise the sound quality, but also could lead to replacing them sooner than you should have to.

Tips for a Daily Cleaning Routine

Your hearing aids are delicate, high-tech devices that operate in warm, damp conditions. This combination can lead to damage unless you make an effort to keep them clean and dry. By using the proper tools, developing a daily routine, and cleaning your devices before bed each night, you will protect your hearing aids from harm. Follow these simple steps each night:

  • Wipe the entire device gently with a soft cloth to remove debris and loose wax.
  • Clean off wax build up with the brush provided by your hearing care provider.
  • Gently clean the holes and ports in the device with the brush or wax pick.
  • For behind-the-ear devices, remove the earmold from the hook and wash it in warm, soapy water. Use a blower to force the water out of the tubes and leave them to dry overnight.
  • Open the battery compartment, remove the batteries, brush out any debris, and leave it open overnight to allow any moisture to evaporate.

You may want to purchase a hearing aid dehumidifier to dry internal components overnight while you sleep. Moisture is a hearing aid’s worst enemy and in our humid Florida climate, sweat can quickly damage them.
